Got a chance to try my home made downrigger. I had bought a casting reel off eBay for $10, but when it came it did not have any kind of drag or break. I never knew such a thing was made and can not figure out how it could ever be used. Then I found this pole with a trolling reel on it at an antique shop for $10. That one had a break but was so worn it didn’t work, so this old Mitchel spinner will do until I find a proper trolling reel. (Or break down and just buy one) And I didn’t notice the super cheap Amazon line counter was in meters, so my math will get some exercise too. But it works, now to get to a lake that actually has trout in it!!
It’s an older heavy rod cut down. A small pulley added to the end. A cheap line counter from Amazon.
It’s permanently mounted in the aluminum tube which is fastened to the kayak track.
I made several weights buy filling short pieces of pipe with lead.
I added a snubber to help some of the stress as well.
My Line is Reaction Tackle Braided Fishing Line – Pro Grade Power Performance
with a Scotty #1181 Mini Power Grip Plus Line Release, 18-Inch Leader w/ Cannonball Snap
