Emergency Kill Switch for a Kayak Electric Motor

One day I started thinking if I wound up in the water for any reason whatsoever with the motor running, my kayak would just keep going and going. t that point I not only would have to swim back to shore, get back to camp or whatever, then go find my kayak but I would also have to hope my kayak, which almost drowned me, didn’t drown some kid on a sup!

After posting the question about kill switches on Facebook I received many responses that it was common sense. I agree it’s common sense, but I was wondering why it was never mentioned anywhere anyplace anytime until I asked. It’s not in the motor guide book, it’s not in any documentation I’ve read, and after researching I found one YouTube video that wasn’t clear and one blog post. And why is it not programmed into my remote? That seems like the logical thing to do. I don’t even think Nucanoe sells kill switches. My dealer never mentioned it or offered to set one up. I’ll bet there are more motorized kayaks and canoes without one than with one.

And it only cost a few bucks to add one. I hope to find a better way some day, like a remote that shuts the motor down when it’s 100 feet away, or better yet, some programmable number. But for now this will have to do.

I got this relay, https://amzn.to/3LHaHVr with this switch https://amzn.to/4fmlrpS . I’m going to try it.

For connections I ordered these https://amzn.to/4d2Y9DR  but did not use them for this application. They are the connections to each battery for plugging in the charger.

  • Power feed in from the battery to the relay and power feed out of the relay to the motor.
  • Run a wire from positive side of the battery to the kill switch’s “M” terminal.
  • Come out of the second “M” terminal on the kill switch to the #85 terminal on the relay.
  • From the other side of the relay, #86 terminal, runs to the ground (negitive side) of the battery
